Programme Philosophy

The subjects taught in secondary schools in Ghana include the General Arts that entail subjects such as English Language, French, History, Religious Studies, Ghanaian Languages and others. The policy of the Ministry of Education is to have about forty percent of students to pursue subjects in the humanities in the universities in the country. At present, only two universities namely, University of Cape Coast (UCC) and University of Education, Winneba (UEW) train teachers in this area in the country. As government continues to establish more Senior High Schools to provide access to all students from the Junior High Schools that qualify to attend them, more and more professional teachers will be needed in the area of General Arts to ensure effective teaching of the subjects at the secondary schools.

This programme is intended to lay solid foundation in the provision of General Arts teachers for the secondary schools.  Added to the information above is the fact that the environment in which the University College is located is multi-lingual with a Francophone country only a few kilometres away, engendering linguistic and cultural interactions between Ghana and Togo. In addition, the Volta Region is one of the most linguistically diverse regions in Ghana. This makes the study of modern languages in the University very relevant.

Besides, the foundation of the E.P. Church which established the University College can be linked to German, French and English missionary activities. Adequate comprehension of the significance of the historical links with the region is necessary for growth and development. Such understanding will emanate from the study of these languages.

Equipped with the knowledge of Modern Languages, graduates of the University College will, therefore, play very significant role in the national development and international affairs. The world has become a global village in which effective communication requires understanding of the major languages used in social and professional life. The teaching of modern languages such as English, French, German and Ghanaian Languages is therefore necessary.
