The Management of the Evangelical Presbyterian University College (EPUC) in conjunction with Globethics.net, an international organisation concerned with ethics in Higher Education, organised a seminar on Tuesday, 11th May 2021 to educate members of Management, Deans, Heads of Department and other duty bearers as well as the Executives of the Student Representative Council on institutional ethics and Ethics Model of Excellence Tool (EMET). The seminar was facilitated by a four-member team comprising Rev. Dr. Emmanuel K. Ansah, a representative from Globethics.net, Amy P. A. Asimah, a staff of EPUC and Messrs. Nurudeen Idrisu and Emmanuel D. Anyidoho, the Admission Officer and Quality Assurance Officer respectively at the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Ho.
The participants, among other things, were taken through what Globethics.net represents, the need for institutional ethics and the Ethics Model of Excellence Tool. The tool covered three main areas: principles, process and results.
According to Rev. Dr. Ansah, the seminar aimed at helping the participants understand and perform an internal assessment of themselves as far as ethical issues in Higher Education were concerned. He went on to say that a pilot survey would be conducted in some selected universities, including EPUC, which was not intended to be a competition or for ranking, but rather to assist Management, Staff and the SRC in appreciating and putting in place those values in order to deepen ethical culture in the institution.
In their presentations, Mrs. Asimah focused on the principles while Messrs. Anyidoho and Idrisu respectively did their exposés on the process and the results. The principles are Leadership principles, Ethics principles, Governance principles and Sustainability principles (LEGS). With regard to the process, it bothers on academic operations and ethics management system and the results deal with staff, students, institutions and professions.
In his closing remarks, the President of EPUC, Prof. Edem Kwasi Bakah, expressed his appreciation to the facilitators for the support. While thanking the participants for taking time out of their busy schedules to attend the event, he urged them to put what they had learnt into practice and prepare adequately for the pilot self-assessment on EPUC’s institutional ethics to be held on Monday, 17th and Tuesday, 18th May 2021. He also encouraged them to give a true and objective picture of EPUC in their assessment so that Management can take steps to improve upon areas that need to be strengthened.
