The Parliamentary Select Committee on Education paid a monitoring visit to the Evangelical Presbyterian University College (EPUC) on Tuesday, 6th May, 2025 at Ho.
Outlining the purpose of the visit, the Chairman of the Select Committee, Honourable Peter Nortsu – Kotoe, Member of Parliament for Akatsi North Constituency indicated that it was to assess and verify the challenges faced by the EPUC by engaging directly with its Administration and Faculty to gather firsthand information and identify policy intervention to enhance operations and sustainability.
On behalf of the Management, Faculty and administrative staff of EPUC, the Acting President Prof. Tsatsu Adogla -Bessa welcomed the Select Committee to the meeting held at the Ho- Kpodzi Campus of the University College.
In his presentation to the Committee, Prof. Tsatsu Adogla – Bessa outlined the Profile of the EPUC, its Four (4) Schools and one (1) Seminary and its four (4) post-graduate, fifteen (15) Undergraduate, three (3) Regular Enrichment and one (1) Diploma Programmes.
The Acting President also touched on the subject of the Presidential Charter for the EPUC.
Prof. Tsatsu Adogla – Bessa outlined infrastructural deficits, competition from public Universities, limited research output, arduous and expensive processes of obtaining affiliation from mentor Universities, inability to attract and retain qualified staff and, above all, acute financial constraints as the challenges facing the EPUC.
Accordingly, on behalf of the EPUC, Prof Adogla – Bessa appealed to the Government to institute a policy of allocating a quota of GETFUND funds to private Universities and establish Research Funds for ‘disadvantaged’ private Universities.
He further appealed to Government to develop policies to provide incentives to encourage Industries and other organisations to collaborate with private universities in order to diversify funding sources and improve the infrastructures of these private universities.
Responding on behalf of the Select Committee, Hon. Peter Nortsu – Kotoe advised EPUC to take a critical look at the new syllabus being drawn for Senior High Schools (SHS) and engage in a lot more sensitization among those in the Volta and Oti Regions to attract more students.
EPUC was also advised to cultivate a strong inclination towards the running of French Programmes.
